N.E.A.T Movement. Small changes, big impact!

The reality is….in a world where technology has made our lives more convenient, we often find ourselves sitting for long periods of time. Whether it be at our desks, in front of the TV, or even during our commutes. This lack of movement not only affects our physical health but also slows down our metabolism.

Did you know, even if you hit the gym for 45-60 minutes every single morning but then sit the rest of the day… you my friend, fall into the category of sedentary. Say What? and with sedentary lifestyle all those scary health things that go along with it. 

All this means is that we were made to move! So let’s focus on getting more movement in throughout our days, increase our metabolism and get us out of that sedentary scaries.

This is actually a tad easier than you might think… with the help of N.E.A.T movements. 

N.E.A.T stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis and refers to the energy expended during activities other than formal exercise, such as walking, gardening, and even fidgeting. Engaging in N.E.A.T movement helps increase your metabolism, burn calories, and ultimately assists in achieving your weight loss goals. 

Small Changes, Big Impact

The key to increasing your N.E.A.T movement is to make small changes that can be easily incorporated into your daily routine, keep reading for some ideas on how to do it. Remember, every step counts and every movement matters. By making these simple adjustments, you will slowly but surely increase your overall activity level and boost your metabolism.

Stand and Move Frequently

Throughout the day, make a conscious effort to stand up and move around whenever possible. Whether it’s taking a phone call while standing, pacing during commercial breaks, or simply stretching your legs every hour, these small breaks from sitting will add up and contribute to higher N.E.A.T movement. Phones and watches have pre programmed alarms to help remind you. If you don’t like the one on your phone, no problem you can set your own. 

Take the Stairs

Elevators and escalators may be convenient, but they are also opportunities missed for increasing N.E.A.T movement. Opt for the stairs whenever possible, be it at work, in shopping malls, or even a few extra sprints up and down in your own home. Climbing stairs not only burns calories but also engages your muscles and improves cardiovascular health.

Walk Whenever You Can

Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective forms of movement. Aim to incorporate more walking into your daily routine. Park further away from your destination, take a stroll during your lunch break, or organize walking meetings or catch-ups with friends. Not only will you increase your N.E.A.Tmovement, but you’ll also enjoy the mental and emotional benefits of being outside and active.

Make Chores Count

Household chores offer an excellent opportunity to increase N.E.A.T movement. Whether it’s vacuuming, mowing the lawn, or washing the car, engage in these activities with enthusiasm and vigor. Embrace the physicality of these tasks and let them become part of your daily exercise routine.

Declutter and Organize

Cleaning up and organizing your space not only creates a sense of calm but can also be a fantastic way to increase N.E.A.T movement. Spend some time each day tidying up, vacuuming, and organizing. It’s an excellent way to get your body moving while also creating a more pleasant living environment.

Remember, consistency is key. Start by incorporating one or two changes into your routine and gradually build upon them as they become habits. Small steps can lead to great progress!
